Reviewing Surgical Techniques for Body Sculpting with Liposuction
- By:David Berry
Liposuction is a popular body sculpting and body contouring surgery that can remove fat and improve the shape of your body. If you have ever considered treatment, the following frequently asked questions will be of great benefit to you.
What is tumescent liposuction?
Tumescent liposuction is a method where anesthetic is injected in large amounts into the fat located beneath the skin. The anesthetic swells the fat, which is semi-liquid, and firms it so it can be extracted. Several microcannulae (small tube devices) are inserted to separate fat from surrounding tissue and withdraw the fat. Very little blood loss is experienced with tumescent liposuction. Tumescent liposuction is appropriate for younger men and women who are close to a healthy weight. The procedure can take four to five hours.
What is super-wet liposuction?
Super-wet liposuction is comparable to tumescent liposuction. The major difference is the quantity of fluid injected is equal to the amount of fat to be extricated in super-wet liposuction. A drawback to super-wet liposuction is the amount of blood loss, which is approximately 8 percent of the total fluid withdrawn. However, the procedure takes much less time than the tumescent, approximately one to two hours, and is safer.
What is ultrasound-assisted liposuction?
Ultrasound-assisted liposuction is quite different from tradition liposuction, in that ultrasound waves cause fat cells to collapse from within prior to extraction. Ultrasound waves transmitted through cannulae can target and liquefy specific fat cells, which make the procedure accurate. Difficult to treat areas, such as the upper abdomen and back, are responsive to ultrasound liposuction. Blood loss is slight compared to tumescent and super-wet liposuction. Overweight men and women can benefit from this method.
What is power assisted liposuction?
Power assisted liposuction is a variant of traditional liposuction. In this procedure powered cannulae move through fat in a back and forwards motion rather than manually by the surgeon as in traditional procedures. This means less force is used. There are no age or weight restrictions with this procedure; however, it is preferable to be within 30 pounds of an ideal weight.
